No Nonsense Nutrition to Reduce Your Inflammation—Without a Statin or Heart Test

No Nonsense Nutrition to Reduce Your Inflammation—Without a Statin or Heart Test Written by Katherine M. Coleman, M.N.T. Most allergy sufferers are all too familiar with rhinitis (inflammation of the nose), sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses), and asthma (inflammation of the airways), but inflammation is also behind arthritis (inflammation of the joints), dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), and more. It’s clear that chronic inflammation can be a systemic cause of a lot of serious illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and many others, therefore it is important to know how to reduce inflammation properly. Inflammation is the activation of the immune system in response to infection, irritation, or injury. It is characterized by an influx of white blood cells, redness, heat, swelling, pain, and dysfunction of the organs involved. It is known as the cornerstone of the body’s healing response and allows more nourishment and immune activity to enter into an injury or infection site. On the surface, inflammation may present itself as local redness, heat, swelling and pain. Acute inflammation is a normal bodily response, but when inflammation endures without serving any function, it becomes damaging to your health and contributes to disease. In the case of allergies, the immune system responds to the presence of an allergen, a normally harmless substance to which it has become overly sensitive. Allergens bind to antibodies, which trigger the release of chemicals like histamine that result in allergy symptoms. In the case of asthma, inflammation causes the airways to swell, making breathing difficult. As the initial response that fires up the immune system, inflammation is the crucial first step in fighting off infection and healing wounds. Chronic inflammation begins to...

It’s a No Grainer.

It's a No Grainer. Written by Katherine M. Coleman, M.N.T. At The Healing Center many of our patients react poorly to grains. As a result, we support Cyrex Labs and have the ability to test for a range of dietary proteins beyond gluten. Also, we are now proud to offer ClearVite-PSF by APEX Energetics. Exactly the same as the rice protein ClearVite, however, instead of using a grain based protein, APEX is using pure pea protein. Additionally, it is half of the serving size and still yields the same nutrient dense active ingredients. The benefits of a grain free diet are touted by Loren Cordain of the Paleo Diet and Jared Diamond of “Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fate of Human Societies.” The adoption of agriculture brought us immeasurably more carbohydrates than we ever consumed during our evolution as Paleolithic man. The Standard American Diet (SAD) reflects that trend of abandoning a nutrient-dense diet and adopting the cheap carbohydrates of modern agriculture. Modern Americans tend to consume a diet low in fat, high in carbohydrates, with little or no animal protein. Since the implementation of this diet there are higher rates of diseases of insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. However, many people are surprised to hear about a life grain-free and the benefits that come along with it. Often questions arise about fiber and nutrient intake, and USDA food pyramid guidelines when, in actuality, individuals on SAD should be concerned with blood sugar imbalances and inflammation. Fiber and Nutrient Intake: Grains are generally touted as being high in fiber, minerals, and B vitamins. Fiber, both insoluble and soluble, can be obtained from fruits and vegetables,...

Tree & Weed Allergies? The Reason for NAET

Tree & Weed Allergies? The Reason for NAET Written by Katherine M. Coleman, M.N.T. Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET) is form of alternative medicine to treating allergies and inflammatory response of the immune system against environmental agents (pollen, dust mites, animal dander, trees) that come into contact with the skin or internal barrier system. When an allergic or sensitized individual is exposed to an allergen, chemicals are released in the body and will display allergy symptoms. The parts of the body that are prone to react to allergies include the eyes, nose, lungs, skin, and stomach. While symptoms may present individually, they all result from an exaggerated immune response to foreign substances. The typical response is sneezing, itchy eyes, watery nose, and nasal drip. Although it’s not fully understood clinically, a neurological component is known to drive allergic reactions. This neurological response affects the immune response but is not limited to what is known as an IgE reaction. When Dr. Starling does an NAET Allergy Clearing, she clears the neurological and IgE realm, as well as other types of reactions, such as complement immune reactions. This immune response is different than a delayed sensitivity reaction, which includes leaky gut or food allergy contamination, and allow unwanted proteins to enter the bloodstream triggering an immune response. Those may be immediate or delayed up to 72 hours, however it is more of a chronic allergy response rather than seasonal.Individuals often don’t associate fatigue, nasal drip, foggy brain, sneezing, eczema, skin issues, etc. as a problem, when they do in fact lay a foundation for an increased seasonal response. There is no need to...

Natural Sunscreen: Astaxanthin

Natural Sunscreen: Astaxanthin Written by Katherine M. Coleman, M.N.T. Internal Sunscreen While the exact pathway is unknown, by consuming this antioxidant pigment you naturally create your own “internal sunscreen” and will thereby prevent your skin from burning. Astaxanthin is a natural compound that may help with the prevention of wrinkles, dry skin, age spots, and freckles. This supernutrient is a fairly unknown carotenoid, known for providing foods with their vibrant colors. However, unlike other carotenoids, astaxanthin is produced only by microalgae and is known for acting as the algae’s survival mechanism; it serves as a protection against malnutrition and/or intense sunlight. This carotenoid is the reason salmon have pink skin, and the endurance to swim upstream. It is imperative to make sure you select a natural variety from marine algae over one that is not synthetic as the synthetic variety generally comes from the farmed salmon industry.Start by taking at least 2 mg per day before working your way up to 4 and 8 mg. It may take anywhere from two to four weeks to reap its benefits, so be sure to use a natural sunscreen in the meantime. The Healing Center recommends the BioAstin brand, which can be found in your natural grocers. Boost Your Immune System!

Boost Your Immune System! Written by Katherine M. Coleman, M.N.T. Through strengthening your immune system and therefore building your resistance in the midst of cold and flu season you attain the ability to ward off disease. The inability to do so is the result of a weakened immune system. It is this lack of resistance that causes individuals to be susceptible to bacteria, microbes, toxins, parasites and viruses passed on from co-workers, friends, and family. Between the stress of the holidays and the arrival of sugar coated Valentine’s Day, people are less likely to eat well or exercise regularly, two habits that enhance your immunity. Aside from avoiding sugar binges and making sure you still eat your vegetables, there are a number of precautions you can take to ensure you have a strong immune system. Exercise 20 minutes 4 times per week Get 7-9 hours of sleep per night Get 10 minutes of sunshine every day on exposed sunscreen-free face and arms Eat 8 servings of veggies per day, especially dark green leafy ones! Practice hugging, laughing, and thinking about something that makes you smile–stress suppresses your immune system! Immune Neutral (anyone- even autoimmune patients- can use): Homeopathics Homeopathics taken at the very onset of cold- and flu-like symptoms can sometimes keep you from even getting sick, just feeling a little tired instead. They should be taken at the first sign of illness, and it’s usually best to keep them on hand or they can be used once you’ve contracted the virus to help you recover from unrelenting symptoms. The Healing Center’s favorites include: Apex Energetics Formulas Flumax-Pro: for flu-like symptoms including fever and chills, aching muscles, headache, malaise, weakness and...

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Let’s start with the definition given by the Mayo Clinic. https://www.mayoclinic.com/health/irritable-bowel-syndrome/DS00106Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). Irritable bowel syndrome commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating gas, diarrhea and constipation. Despite these uncomfortable signs and symptoms, IBS doesn’t cause permanent damage to your colon. Most people with IBS find that symptoms improve as they learn to control their condition. Only a small number of people with irritable bowel syndrome have severe signs and symptoms. Fortunately, unlike more-serious intestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome doesn’t cause inflammation or changes in bowel tissue or increase your risk of colorectal cancer. In many cases, you can control irritable bowel syndrome by managing your diet, lifestyle and stress. We are very excited to announce that Dr. Marie Starling of The Healing Center is going to be featured on “Colorado and Company” on Channel 9 this Tuesday January 11th at 10:00 am discussing this very issue. She will be talking about this common health concern that you or someone you love could be experiencing.  We don’t want you to miss this opportunity to learn about this condition first hand!! Tune in with us either on Channel 9 or streaming online by clicking here.

Functional medicine

What is Functional Medicine? Have you been from doctor to doctor in our Western culture’s medical community but still have no relief for what is causing you distress? Functional medicine may be what you have been searching for! By definition, functional medicine is personalized medicine that deals with primary prevention and underlying causes instead of symptoms for serious chronic disease. It is a science-based field of health care that is grounded in the following principles: Biochemical individuality describes the importance of individual variations in metabolic function that derive from genetic and environmental differences among individuals. Patient-centered medicine emphasizes “patient care” rather than “disease care,” following Sir William Osler’s admonition that “It is more important to know what patient has the disease than to know what disease the patient has.” Dynamic balance of internal and external factors. Web-like interconnections of physiological factors – an abundance of research now supports the view that the human body functions as an orchestrated network of interconnected systems, rather than individual systems functioning autonomously and without effect on each other. For example, we now know that immunological dysfunctions can promote cardiovascular disease, that dietary imbalances can cause hormonal disturbances, and that environmental exposures can precipitate neurologic syndromes such as Parkinson’s disease. Health as a positive vitality – not merely the absence of disease. Promotion of organ reserve as the means to enhance health span. Functional medicine is anchored by an examination of the core clinical imbalances that underlie various disease conditions. Those imbalances arise as environmental inputs such as diet, nutrients (including air and water), exercise, and trauma are processed by one’s body, mind, and spirit through a unique set of genetic predispositions, attitudes, and beliefs. The fundamental...
